Historical Society Update

The outdoor History Walk Timeline comprised of seven panels and accompanying photos offers a comprehensive overview of Grosse Ile's evolution from its earliest days to the present. The Historical Society's intention with this History Walk Timeline was to make Grosse Ile's rich history more available to our community since our Museum is open for only a limited number of hours per week. The Timeline is located outside of the Museum so the story of the history of Grosse Ile is certainly more accessible. In the short period the History Walk Timeline has been in place, we have witnessed dozens of community members including young visitors stopping by to view the information displayed.

The two TVs in the Museum allow the Historical Society to tell stories about our community's history both within the Museum walls and "on the road" when we have been invited to speak about G.I. history. After viewing this display the visitor leaves with a comprehensive understanding of Grosse Ile's rich history. The touch screen TV permits visitors to pinpoint over 100 historical sites around the Island---a prodigious number for such a small community. The TVs have helped our docents provide a complete and visual picture of Grosse Ile history to our Sunday visitors to the Museum. We have also used the TVs when we have made presentations off site to community groups (e.g., Garden Club, Bootlegger Bash).

The Foundation supports life long learning for all Islanders by financially supporting creative and exemplary educational opportunities within the G.I. Township Schools and the community. The creation of the History Walk Timeline and the TV exhibits offer an experience for all ages to learn about Grosse Ile's rich history especially with our 250th anniversary on the horizon in 2026. These updates will be a legacy for years to come.
